The Impact of Terroir
Terroir Talks x Waterford Whisky
Paris / Rotterdam / Berlin
Spring 2023
Terroir in partnership with Waterford Whisky hosted three masterclasses in Paris, Rotterdam & Berlin. These programs were open to selected invitees from trade and media to taste and discuss Waterford Distillery and the science that underpins their terroir-driven production processes to explore whisky’s most natural flavours.
Hosts: Mark Reynier, Founder Waterford Whisky & Dr Dustin Herb of Oregon State University.
Mark Reynier, founder of Waterford Whisky and previously Bruichladdich, and Dr. Dustin Herb, of Oregon State University, an expert in plant genetics and breeding, hosted a masterclass focused on the science underpinning terroir-driven production processes, exploring the origin of whisky’s most natural flavors. The class focused on the importance of the origin of barley in whisky, where and how it is grown, and how science can enhance our understanding and appreciation of terroir.
Participants left with a deep education about the real origins of flavor in single malt whisky, along with an understanding of some of the latest scientific developments in this field.
The program was coordinated by Arlene Stein, President and Founder of Terroir Hospitality, and Angelika Schwaff, Food Writer, and Culinary Tourism Expert.
